FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Jordan Rockowitz, Head of IMR NY Office, Addresses Students at NYC Data Science Academy
New York, NY
Last week in NYC, Jordan Rockowitz was invited to attend the graduation reception for a class of the NYC Data Science Academy (DSA). Mr. Rockowitz, an expert in preparing technology staff for today’s modern interview, presented important information on the art of the interview. He touched upon important (but often underestimated) points, including:
- Constructing an effective line of questioning
- How to handle the “money” question
- The #1 way to close an interview
The DSA runs several programs, including a highly intensive 12 week, 600 hour boot camp, culminating in the award of a certificate of completion. Vivian Zhang, founder of DSA, mentioned that they had an impressive 90% plus placement rate within 5 weeks of graduation. Many of these students were entering data analytics as a 2nd career, while others were continuing students. At the reception, Jordan had a chance to speak with many of the graduates about what motivated them to choose a career in data science and their concerns regarding seeking relevant employment. He was subsequently invited to come back and speak to a class of current students about developing and implementing interview skills and techniques, particularly focusing on the challenges that data science candidates have in articulating their value proposition to prospective employers. The talk was streamed live to students across the United States and overseas. Following the presentation, a Q&A session occurred.
Several questions included:
How to negotiate an offer?
How important are “soft skills” in the candidate selection process?
How marketable will be former research analysts who choose to become data scientists?
What is the role of data analytics candidates in buyside financial firms?
Following the presentation, the students conveyed both that they had a better understanding of what they needed to accomplish when interviewing and how to articulate their value proposition to hiring managers.
